Board Companion Play App Instructions
DERBY CAST APP
Board Companion
Use the physical Derby Cast game board while the app serves as the digital scorekeeper, managing selections, scores, standings, scoring history, and board movement.
BOARD COMPANION — HOST INSTRUCTIONS
Manage players and race selections, enter official results and odds, calculate scores and board positions, and direct marker movement on the physical game board.
- 1.
Open the Host App. Select Board Companion.
- 2.
Save your codes. Write down the Private Host Recovery Code and Room Code. Share only the Room Code with players joining the Board Companion Room.
- 3.
Match digital and physical markers. Each player enters a name and Room Code and receives a marker number from 1–20. Give the player the physical game marker bearing that same number.
- 4.
Mark unavailable horses. Select every scratched horse and every horse not entered in the race before locking selections.
- 5.
Collect selections. Players choose their horses and finishing predictions, then select Save Pick.
- 6.
Verify and lock. Confirm that the roster, selections, and physical marker numbers are correct. Select Lock All Selections.
- 7.
Score the race. After the race, enter the official Win, Place, and Show horses and final odds. Select Score Race. The app calculates race points and cumulative board positions.
- 8.
Move the markers. Direct players to move their physical markers along the Odds Advancement Table according to their accumulated point totals.
- 9.
Begin the next race. Select Next Race and repeat. For a tie, conduct an additional race for the tied players or declare co-winners only if that option was agreed upon before play.
- 10.
End the game. Selecting Exit ends the game. The Host can retrieve the scoring history later using the Private Host Recovery Code.
- 11.
Recover the Host room. After a disconnection, reenter the Host App, select Recover Host Room, and enter the Room Code and Private Host Recovery Code. Player points and board positions will be restored.
- 12.
Reconnect a player. The player reenters the Player App, selects Board Companion, enters the Room Code and the same name, and selects Rejoin Existing Player. Approve the alert to restore that player’s information.
- 13.
Use Staff-Assisted Mode when needed. Switch to Staff-Assisted Mode (Read Only) when players will not use the Player App. The Host or Staff Member enters every player’s selection and the official race results, then shows the digital scoreboard after each race. Players move their physical markers as directed.
- 14.
Use Refresh only when needed. The app refreshes automatically. Refresh is a backup for a temporary connection delay and will not erase selections or restart the game.
- 15.
Manage the roster. The Host can add, remove, or reconnect a player upon request.

- 3.
Verify and save. Confirm that your name, marker number, horse selection, and prediction are correct on the Live Leaderboard. Select Save Pick. Only the Host can change your saved selection upon request.
- 4.
Follow the Leaderboard. The Live Leaderboard displays each player’s selection and board position. Watch the race while the Host enters the official first-, second-, and third-place finishers.

Continue playing. The app refreshes when the Host selects Next Race. Points accumulate until a winner is declared. During a tie-resolution race, only tied players remain eligible.
- 9.

- 10.
Request help when needed. The Host or Staff Member can change a saved selection, add or remove a player, or reconnect a disconnected player upon request.
